The average internet user is now on social media for 2 hours and 15 minutes per day, up 9 minutes from 2016. A third of online time is spent on social networks and messaging, according to Global Web Index.
Social media capture 33% of online time, followed by online TV and streaming (16%) and music streaming (16%). 13% of time is spent on online press.
Social media usage is increasing every year. In 2012, the average internet user spent just 1 hour and 30 minutes daily on social networks and messaging. Currently, 2 hours and 15 minutes are devoted to those activities.
The global trend of devoting more and more time to social media is most clearly sean in women and younger age groups, but according to the report, all groups of internet users are devoting increasing amounts of their time to networking and messaging.
This trend is driven by the increasing usage of mobile devices and the migration of internet activities to mobile, which allow users to access various apps and services throughout the day.
